Long ago, in the peaceful age of Krita Yuga, Sage Pulastya married Manini, the daughter of Sage Trinabindu. Their gentle son, Vishrava, grew up to be a wise scholar admired across all the realms. Rishi Bharadwaja offered his daughter Devavarnini in marriage to Vishrava.
Soon, a bright boy named Vaisravana was born. From his earliest years, everyone knew he was destined for greatness. As he grew, the world came to know him by another name: Kubera.
Kubera sought wisdom rather than comfort. Leaving for the deep forests, he devoted himself to severe penance. For hundreds of years, he survived first on only water, then on air alone, and finally on neither, remaining completely motionless in deep prayer.
Pleased by a thousand years of steadfast devotion, Lord Brahma appeared before him: "Ask, my son, what you desire."
Kubera bowed humbly: "Make me a Lokpala, a guardian of the world."
Brahma granted his wish, making Kubera the guardian of all worldly wealth—an equal to Indra, Yama, and Varuna. Brahma also bestowed upon him the Pushpaka Vimana, a glorious golden flying chariot crafted by Vishwakarma that moved wherever its master willed.
Seeking a kingdom where all creatures could live peacefully, Kubera turned to his father. Vishrava told him of Lanka, a fortress perched upon Mount Trikuta in the southern ocean. The city had been built by Vishwakarma for the Rakshasas, who had abandoned it after losing a war against Lord Vishnu.
Kubera flew south, accompanied by the peaceful Yakshas who chose him as their king. Under his benevolent hand, Lanka flourished. Its golden spires shimmered in the ocean sun, trade prospered, and its citizens sang songs of their just and generous ruler.
Down in Patala, the banished Rakshasas seethed with envy. Their chieftain Sumali observed Kubera’s glory and sent his daughter Kaikasi to wed Sage Vishrava.
From this union, half-brothers to Kubera were born: Dasagriva (Ravana), Kumbhakarna, and Vibhishana, alongside their sister Surpanakha. Through fierce penance, Dasagriva obtained a boon of near-invincibility from Brahma, making him impervious to gods, demons, beasts, and celestial beings.
Filled with pride, Dasagriva resolved to reclaim Lanka.
Dasagriva sent an envoy to Kubera, demanding Lanka as the ancestral home of the Rakshasas.
Though Kubera offered to share the realm peacefully, his father Vishrava warned him: "Dasagriva's power is limitless and his wrath knows no bounds. He will destroy everything that stands before him. Step aside and leave Lanka."
Valuing the lives of his people far more than a throne of gold, Kubera gathered his family and subjects. They boarded the Pushpaka Vimana and journeyed north to the tranquil slopes of Mount Kailasa, the sacred abode of Lord Shiva.
High in the cool, mist-kissed Himalayas, Kubera built a magnificent new capital: Alakapuri.
Its centerpiece was the enchanting Chaitra garden, blooming with celestial blossoms and sparkling with clear mountain pools so dazzling that even the Devas envied its beauty.
Safe under Shiva's mountain gaze, Kubera resumed his travels in the Pushpaka Vimana, spreading prosperity and watching over the earth's hidden treasures.
Dasagriva, now sweeping across heaven and earth to conquer all three worlds, turned his gaze toward Alakapuri. Kubera sent an envoy offering fraternal counsel, urging him to turn away from terror and rule with justice.
Furious at what he perceived as an insult, Dasagriva led an army of Rakshasas straight to the gates of Alakapuri. Kubera’s minister Manibhadra and the brave Yakshas fought valiantly, but the demon king’s magical boons proved overwhelming.
Kubera himself entered the fray, launching celestial fire against Dasagriva's magic. In the fierce duel, Kubera fell wounded, and went to Karnali, on the river bank of the holy river Narmada.
Here Kuber prayed to Lord Shiva again. Lord Shiva appeared and explained that Ravana was equally a great devotee of his and that he would not be able to intervene directly. Lord Shiva advised Kuber to pray to Maa Amba to find a solution.
Kubera prayed intensely to Maa Amba, who manifested before him and assured him of her eternal protection from Ravana. Maa Amba established the Kuber Bhandari Temple in the form of Lord Shiva here at Karnali by the holy Narmada, remaining there for divine protection forever.
With justice restored across the realms, the Lord of Wealth blessed the chariot and bade it always serve the righteous, continuing his eternal, peaceful reign forever.
